Timber treatment related... |

The Wolman company began its existence as a research organisation in the early 20th century and this history has many positive repercussions today. Wolman places the greatest possible emphasis on product performance. This includes both the performance of the treated wood and also the performance of the products in the treatment plant. When it comes to performance of treated wood however, preservatives can only work where they are present. In part, this aspect of performance can be designed into a product by the use of additives to aid penetration and deploy predictable ratios of active ingredients throughout the treated zone. Wolman’s Wolmanit CX range is designed to do just that and has been the key to the range’s success in markets such as Sweden, where a great emphasis is placed on preservative penetration in order to achieve the rigorous local quality marks including NTR. Sweden however is different to the UK in that there is a proliferation of permeable species such as pine and timber is routinely kiln-dried before treatment. In the UK we face the technical questions brought about by a proliferation of resistant species such as spruce. This is more akin to Wolman’s home market of Germany where novel techniques such as enhanced and oscillating processes and incising have been used to excellent effect to produce durable spruce roundwood under the RAL quality scheme. Wolman believes that there is much to be learnt from the practices of other markets, both in terms of producing premium quality pine posts and maximising the performance of our prolific spruce plantations. Wolman is delighted by the work currently being done by the Wood Protection Association to disseminate information to the market. In addition, the progress being made around quality initiatives is very welcome and timely. The UK market plays host to some of the highest quality and best known preservative suppliers in the world. The WPA is working to add the high quality framework that will compliment these preservative products and maximise their performance. In doing so, the industry will ensure the future popularity of treated wooden posts. For more information, visit www.wolman.com |
