UKFPA “VERY PLEASED AND RELIEVED” AT END TO GOVERNMENT’S PLANS FOR ENGLAND’S FOREST SELL-OFF.

Members of the UK Forest Products Association (UKFPA) across the wood processing sector are said to be “very pleased and relieved” at the news that the Government has halted its plans to change the ownership and management of the public forest estate in England.

David Sulman, Executive Director of UKFPA, said “This news is the outcome we have been working hard for; the plans were ill-conceived and fundamentally flawed. It seems that the Government had been very poorly advised on this matter and had completely underestimated the strength of public opinion. The strong public backlash seems to have taken the Government by surprise. Businesses across the wood processing sector will be very relieved that the threat to the continuity of wood supply has been lifted, as many jobs and businesses would have been put in jeopardy. Despite the euphoria surrounding the U-turn, we still have concerns about the planned sell-off of 40,000 hectares (about 15%) of the Forestry Commission woodland estate in England. This requirement, which was a consequence of the 2010 Comprehensive Spending Review, was temporarily suspended last week, but it is ‘unfinished business’ and we urgently need clarification of the Government’s intentions. This very large scale disposal programme should be consigned to history as well”.
